In a significant stride towards environmental stewardship, ABB India has achieved a remarkable feat by certifying half of its manufacturing locations as ‘water positive’. Among these, the Peenya campus in Bengaluru stands out with a water positivity index of 1.05, surpassing withdrawals for manufacturing activities with a surplus of replenished water. This certification, bestowed by the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) Council, underscores ABB’s commitment to sustainability and resource conservation.
The journey towards water positivity involved a systematic approach, integrating initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, reduction in freshwater consumption, water recycling, and real-time monitoring of water usage. At the Peenya unit, innovative cross-wave technology-based recharge tanks and conventional recharge wells capture runoff, replenishing groundwater levels. Furthermore, water-efficient fixtures and a sewage treatment plant enhance water recyclability, reducing freshwater dependency by 22 percent compared to the previous year.
Sanjeev Sharma, Country Head and Managing Director of ABB India, emphasizes the company’s dedication to sustainability, citing water preservation as a pivotal aspect of their corporate purpose. ABB’s water management initiatives have been validated by esteemed organizations like the GRIHA Council and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), reflecting their adherence to stringent assessment criteria.
Additionally, ABB’s commitment extends to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing energy efficiency across its manufacturing locations. The company’s participation in the Green Factory Building rating system and achievement of an 87.8 percent reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions underscore their holistic approach to environmental stewardship.
As a technology leader in electrification and automation, ABB remains steadfast in its mission to drive industrial transformation while prioritizing sustainability. With a workforce of over 105,000 employees worldwide, ABB continues to innovate solutions that optimize manufacturing processes and promote resource efficiency.
