Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI), a leader in materials science engineering, has received a Transfer of Technology (ToT) from the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) to produce add-on composite armour for India’s indigenous Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) vehicles. The collaboration marks a significant milestone in India’s pursuit of advanced materials indigenization for enhanced vehicle protection.

The project focuses on equipping WhAP vehicles with lightweight composite armour that meets STANAG Level II and III standards for comprehensive ballistic protection. This new armour integrates CUMI’s Zirconia Toughened Alumina ceramic technology, backed by DMRL’s innovations, offering superior mobility and resilience against extreme impacts and weather conditions.

As India’s first locally designed amphibious wheeled infantry combat vehicle, the WhAP is adaptable for military and civilian applications. The initiative aligns with India’s defense modernization goals and boosts the export potential of military technology, while expanding domestic manufacturers’ opportunities.

Pioneering Lightweight Armour Solutions

CUMI’s elastomeric composite armour features high-end technical ceramics layered with rubber and a metallic backing for durability. Each WhAP vehicle will use up to 300 custom-engineered panels, designed to contour precisely to the vehicle’s structure, enhancing safety without significantly adding weight. This cutting-edge solution is a result of CUMI’s 70 years of expertise and its long-standing partnership with DMRL.

Contributing to Global Defense Capabilities

With the global armored vehicle market projected to grow from $23.73 billion in 2024 to $37.85 billion by 2032, and the advanced materials market reaching $10.10 billion, CUMI is poised to meet the rising demand. The company’s investments in R&D and manufacturing capabilities support India’s aspirations to become a global defense hub, aiming for defense exports of INR 50,000 crores by 2028-29.
