In March 2025, Kennametal launched its KenCut™ Micro series, a state-of-the-art range of micro end mills (MEMM) specifically developed for precision machining of medical-grade bone screws and small components. This introduction marked a milestone as the company’s first micro mill offering with the KCSM10 grade, optimized for machining stainless steel and titanium—materials commonly used in medical implants.
Designed for maximum accuracy, the KenCut™ Micro end mills enabled manufacturers to achieve clean, burr-free cuts, especially in intricate features such as the face and hexalobe drive recesses of fasteners. By incorporating advanced 3- and 4-flute geometries, the tools provided superior chip evacuation and higher metal removal rates, contributing to improved cycle times and productivity.
Engineered with an optimized carbide grade, the tools demonstrated high fracture resistance, reduced deflection, and enhanced machining stability. The extended neck geometry allowed for improved access in tight and complex part geometries—critical in the miniature, high-precision machining required in medical device production.
With standard sizes ranging from 0.2 mm to 1.0 mm and custom options available, the KenCut™ Micro series catered to a wide array of micro-machining needs. Features such as corner protection and gash design further extended tool life and reliability by minimizing chipping.
This launch empowered the medical machining industry with tools that elevated accuracy, efficiency, and durability, making it easier to meet demanding performance and regulatory requirements.
