Power plant turbines are crucial for generating electricity but often face corrosion and scale buildup, especially in challenging environments. Coastal plants, for instance, struggle with salt accumulation on turbine blades, while geothermal power plants contend with minerals in steam that cause rust and scaling. Cortec® Corporation, a leader in corrosion control, provides effective solutions to restore turbines to their best condition and protect them until they’re back online.

Light Cleaning and Temporary Protection

For minor rust and grime, ElectriCorr™ VpCI®-239 is a quick and efficient fix. This versatile aerosol product removes light debris and rust when sprayed on turbine blades and shafts, offering a dual-action benefit: cleaning and temporary corrosion protection. A thin layer left on surfaces after cleaning can shield the turbine from rust until it’s reactivated.

Jim Holden, Engineering and Technical Sales Manager at Cortec® Global Services (CGS), Inc., shares his approach: “During turbine maintenance, applying a light coat of ElectriCorr™ VpCI®-239 daily has proven effective.” Many in the industry favor this product for its ease of use and protective qualities on large turbines.

Eco-Friendly Rust and Scale Removal

For heavier corrosion, Cortec® offers biobased solutions like VpCI®-422, which contains 92% USDA-certified biobased content. This solution is ideal for immersing whole rotors in a dip tank for up to 24 hours, loosening rust effectively. Afterward, rinsing the turbine and neutralizing with VpCI®-414, an alkaline cleaner with corrosion inhibitors, completes the process.

For surfaces that can’t be immersed, VpCI®-423 is available in a gel form that adheres to specific areas, allowing for targeted treatment. Covering the gel with plastic wrap helps it stay moist for extended treatment periods. Additionally, EcoClean® Biodegradable Scale and Rust Remover provides a 100% biobased option to tackle rust and scale in an environmentally responsible way.

Keeping Rust Away Until Startup

Cleaning turbines is just the start; preventing rust from reappearing is essential until they’re back in action. A coastal power plant in the Middle East faced recurring rust issues due to salt exposure. Cortec® recommended using VpCI®-422 to remove new rust, followed by a VpCI®-414 wash and ElectriCorr™ VpCI®-239 for ongoing protection. This method allowed the plant to leave the rotor out for a week, rust-free, confirming the solution’s effectiveness. This approach offers months of corrosion resistance for turbines awaiting reinstallation.

Maintain Your Turbines with Cortec®’s Solutions

Corrosion may be unavoidable in certain environments, but with the right products, turbines can be kept in optimal condition, ready for efficient performance. For more details on turbine preservation, contact Cortec® Corporation and explore their proven rust-removal solutions.
