Seco is advancing its commitment to sustainable manufacturing by developing a digital tool designed to support its production units in tracking and enhancing their sustainability efforts. With a focus on making manufacturing faster, easier, and more environmentally responsible, Seco’s new Industrial Sustainability Assessment tool enables sites to measure their performance, prioritize improvements, and align with the company’s global sustainability targets.
Seco’s ambitious goals include achieving 90% circular waste by 2030, reaching Net-Zero operations by 2035, enhancing supplier documentation, reducing its environmental footprint, and fostering a safe, healthy, and inclusive workplace culture. However, translating these objectives into actionable steps at local sites posed challenges, particularly in areas like circularity and Net-Zero that require new processes and mindsets.
To address this, Seco introduced the Industrial Sustainability Assessment in 2021. The tool guides sites through six progressive levels, from basic legal compliance at Level 1 to industry best practices at Level 6. Covering key areas such as People and Communities, Climate, Biodiversity and Circularity, Site Specific operations, and Supplier responsibility, the tool helps users assess current practices and create tailored action plans.
The tool was co-developed in collaboration with sites in Sweden and the Netherlands, ensuring it reflects real-world challenges and is practical for on-site use. Initially launched in Excel in 2023, user feedback led Seco to digitize the tool within its MyPages platform, offering a more streamlined and mobile-friendly experience.
Since its rollout in 2024, the Sustainability Assessment Tool has become a critical resource for sites to understand their sustainability performance, set improvement priorities, track progress, and share best practices globally. It now provides a comprehensive view of progress across social, environmental, and strategic areas, helping sites create actionable plans for long-term growth.
Looking ahead, Seco is exploring an externally adapted version of the tool for stakeholders and customers who wish to integrate sustainability assessments into their operations.
