ETP HYDRO-GRIP – The All-Rounder is a high precision hydraulic toolholder system that gives fast, accurate tool changes, outstanding clamping security, and very long tool life across a wide range of milling, drilling, and reaming operations.
Interview with Ravi Naik, Senior Consultant ETP Transmission (MW) India.ETP Transmission AB has a strong presence in the Indian metalcutting market through its Partners & Distributors ;ETP HYDRO-GRIPs have set high standards in precise and secure tool holding at customers across automotive, aerospace, medical and general engineering segments.
In this interview, Ravi Naik Senior Consultant ETP Transmission (MW), India explains why ETP HYDRO-GRIP® is known as “The All Rounder” among Indian users.
MW : What makes ETP HYDRO-GRIP® an “All Rounder”?
Ravi Naik: HYDRO-GRIP high precision toolholders are your guarantee for secure clamping in most milling, drilling and reaming tools. Their unique strength provides precision and rigid tool stability to improve machining performance for the largest number of applications.
The HYDRO-GRIP family covers everything from very slim “Pencil” holders for finishing in tight cavities to robust Heavy Duty designs for roughing, all within one common system. This means a customer can standardize on one hydraulic platform and still handle finishing, semi finishing, roughing and even heavy roughing with the correct chuck bore diameters.
Users see better surface finish, longer tool life and more stable machining because the holder provides rigid support and vibration damping, even in demanding operations. The high clamping force guarantees a secure clamping of your milling, drilling and reaming tools with minimum tool runout.
One gets an idea of the “All Rounder” tag for ETP HYDRO-GRIP from the graph above left and its positioning diagram at above right.

MW :How does HYDRO-GRIP improve daily work on the shop floor?
Ravi Naik: Operators appreciate the fast, fool proof and accurate tool change – the HYDRO-GRIP design allows the pressurization of the holder without a tool in place without any damage. A simple preset torque wrench, typically 6 Nm, gives consistent clamping torque every time, which is critical for process reliability and predictable tool performance.
The hydraulic design has a natural damping effect, reducing vibration that can otherwise cause pull out problems in shrink fit systems or lead to poor surface finish. In practice, this means higher allowable cutting data and fewer unexpected tool failures, which is exactly what Indian customers want when they push productivity on modern CNC machines.
MW: What about flexibility and different tool shank types?
Ravi Naik: HYDRO-GRIP is extremely versatile – it can clamp h6 / h7 cylindrical shanks, and with the correct sleeves we can also hold Weldon or Whistle Notch tools securely. The ability to clamp reliably on reduced shank lengths is very popular, because many special tools and step tools have shorter gripping areas, and HYDRO-GRIP can handle these without compromising safety. ETP offers a wide range of reduction sleeves, including “Coolant Flush” versions with slots that direct high pressure coolant through the tool and down into deep cavities. This improves chip evacuation and tool life, especially in mould and die or medical implant machining where deep pockets and small tools are common.
MW: Can you share couple of concrete customer success stories?
Ravi Naik: A good example is Koch & Co., a router machining customer who changed from mechanical ER collet chucks to ETP HYDRO-GRIP G2 holders. After the switch they doubled router bit life – from about 70–80 sheets per tool to 150–160 sheets – while keeping the same high quality finish. They also cut tool change time from around five minutes to under one minute, which gave a major reduction in machine downtime and a very fast payback on the investment….. and similarly many more…
Another user, in medical component machining, highlights how easy and safe it is to change tools in very tight spaces without worrying about wrenches slipping. With different sized sleeves in the same holder, they can quickly swap between tools for different operations, and ETP has even customized holders when the machine envelope demanded a special design.
MW : How does HYDRO-GRIP support long term productivity?
Ravi Naik: HYDRO-GRIP is essentially maintenance free – there are no moving parts that need regular adjustment, and the sealing design minimizes the leakage problems common in other hydraulic systems. Because the clamping mechanism is stable over time, the holder maintains its accuracy and concentricity throughout its life cycle, which gives consistent quality and predictable process capability. All holders are manufactured to achieve a total indicated runout of ≤ 0.004 mm measured at 2.5 times the tool diameter, which is a very demanding requirement. This high precision, combined with strong clamping and damping, is what allows customers to safely increase cutting speeds and feeds while keeping dimensional accuracy under tight control.
