The MULTI-MASTER system—an innovative range of assembled tools with exchangeable cutting heads—was introduced by ISCAR at the start of the 21st century. Despite being more than 25 years old, it remains one of the most respected and widely used systems in the metal cutting industry. Though the concept initially faced skepticism, it eventually inspired many competitors to develop similar solutions.
The MULTI-MASTER design is based on three key elements: taper centering, face contact, and threaded connection. Taper centering ensures high accuracy, while face contact guarantees excellent dimensional repeatability. The threaded connection allows quick and simple head replacement. Initially, the use of threads in cemented carbide heads raised concerns because carbide is hard yet brittle. ISCAR solved this challenge through a specially engineered thread profile, which later became a benchmark for similar systems across the industry.
One of the biggest advantages of MULTI-MASTER is its ability to compete with solid carbide tools in terms of accuracy and rigidity. Since the head overhang remains within close tolerances, replacing worn heads does not require additional setup operations. Operators can change the head directly on the machine, reducing downtime and improving productivity—an important requirement in today’s smart manufacturing environment.

ISCAR has also introduced innovative anti-vibration shanks featuring a carbide body combined with a built-in damping mechanism. These shanks improve stability in long-reach applications and unstable cutting conditions
The system also offers remarkable versatility. A single tool body can accommodate multiple cutting heads, transforming the shank into a universal holder and reducing inventory costs. MULTI-MASTER shanks are available in steel, carbide, and vibration-dampening heavy metal versions. Adapters, extensions, and reducers further simplify customization for specific machining applications. This flexibility enables thousands of tool combinations for milling, drilling, threading, engraving, and even gear machining.
Another major advantage is cost efficiency. Rising tungsten carbide prices have significantly increased tooling expenses for manufacturers worldwide. MULTI-MASTER addresses this challenge by reducing carbide consumption while maintaining performance close to that of solid carbide tools. The rigid head-to-shank connection ensures excellent stiffness and cutting stability, making the system a practical and economical alternative.

Over the years, ISCAR has continuously expanded the MULTI-MASTER portfolio. The range now includes solid carbide heads in various geometries such as cylindrical, tapered, ball-nose, disc-type, and toroidal designs. Recent additions include six-flute high-feed milling heads for roughing hardened steels.
